Where can I learn more about purchasing/leasing any of the popular graphics programs by Adobe?
Before you purchase check my.umbc.edu under “computer and technology” and “download software” first. (Creative Cloud, Photoshop, Premier, After Effects, Dreamweaver, InDesign, audio editing, etc. are all available through the UMBC Bookstore and cloud).

What computer/laptop should I buy?
Generally speaking, having a laptop with a good graphics card is highly recommended. Touchscreens can be nice, and MACs are popular, but neither are requirements. This is a recent list of good laptops for artists. Consider “gamer” advertised laptops as many often have similar processing power but cost less.

Is there an academic discount?
The best discounts will be through the UMBC Bookstore, always check with them before purchasing a computer or software.

How can I upload photos to the IMDA community?
Use the IMDA Flickr Account for sharing/uploading photographs.

What software is used to publish my thesis?
InDesign and the Blurb plugin. Use the overview video tutorial for Blurb and Lynda.com InDesign tutorials.

How do I access Lynda.com?
Through the Catonsville Public Library. UMBC students may open a Baltimore County Public Library [ BCPL ]account and this will offer free access to Lynda.com.

  • Step 1 Setup a library account with BCPL using your Baltimore County address.
    • Non-Baltimore County residents may use UMBC’s address: UMBC; FA#111; 1000 Hilltop Circle, Catonsville MD 21250
    • BCPL account holders skip to Step 2
  • Step 2 On the Library’s Lynda.com portal enter your BCPL card number and PIN [ the last 4-digits of the phone# entered on the Library account ].
